There is a particular feeling that arrives when you step into a beautiful hotel. The light is warmer, the materials are surer of themselves, and you sense that someone has thought of everything. Our Atlanta clients wanted that feeling at the bottom of their own stairs. What they had was an unfinished basement. What they asked for was a place of arrival.
The lounge and bar. Gold velvet swivel chairs gather around a sculptural cocktail table of brass and glass beneath a capiz-shell chandelier that scatters the light like water. Beyond them stands the bar — a fluted island in warm taupe under dark stone with cognac leather seating and brass lattice pendants overhead — placed precisely where a hotel would put one. A butler's pantry works quietly behind it.
The theater. Charcoal walls and a beamed ceiling surround an oversized velvet sectional and an onyx side table, and an arched proscenium frames twin screens. It is a room that understands darkness as a luxury.
The gym and bath. A room wrapped in mirror and cove light where bronze figures climb the wall as sculpture. Through a millwork doorway is the bath: an infrared sauna, a burl-wood vanity and a floor-to-ceiling marble shower with dual brass rain heads above herringbone marble underfoot. It is a private spa at the end of a workout.
The room under the stairs. And for the children, the detail every guest asks about — a hidden room behind a Murphy door set invisibly into the millwork, one of two concealed doors in the home.
From the studs. None of it existed before. Framing, wiring, plumbing, millwork and every furnishing came together until a bare shell became the most used floor of the house. We managed the design from first concept to final styling and stood as the family's advocate through every stage of the build.
